Since the outbreak of COVID-19 this spring, many in the community have felt the physical, emotional and financial strain of job loss, business closings and restriction of activity. Many have suffered the loss of loved ones.
1st-responders and essential workers alike have placed their own safety & well-being on the line to assure that the community is well-cared for over the past several months. Much needed volunteer resources have also been hindered in their mission to serve the most vulnerable in our community.
"WHATCOM RELIEF 2020" is a joint collaboration between the Bellingham Harborview Lions Club, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and our local communities to raise funds for and awareness of the immediate needs of the communities we serve.
Lions Club International has been serving the needs of the world since 1916. Our local Lions Clubs Zone H-1 has been in existence and serving Whatcom County since 1966 and is a part of the larger Multiple District 19 of WA State and parts of southern British Columbia. Zone H-1 is comprised of seven clubs throughout the Greater Whatcom County area. Their motto is "We Serve"!!
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (ASFP) was founded in 1987 with the express purpose and dedication to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP creates a culture that's smart about mental health through education and community programs, develops suicide prevention through research and advocacy, and provides support for those affected by suicide.
AFSP has local chapters in all 50 states with programs and events nationwide such as the "Out of the Darkness Walk" held here in Bellingham each fall. This "Walk" supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's education and support programs and its bold goal to reduce the annual U.S. rate of suicide 20 percent by the year 2025.
